I LOVE teaching art and so enjoy getting to know your kids in all their lovely uniqueness. Thank you so much for this beautiful privilege; I do not take it for granted. In order to keep the classroom orderly and the business side of Kimberly V. Art running smoothly, I have constructed a framework of fairness and community care
through these Policies, Procedures, and Release of Liability:
Your student's place in the class is only guaranteed for the specified duration and class time of your registration. If you need to make a change please re-register. Classes fill up and I want to keep it a fair and organized process.
When you sign your student up for classes you sign them up for a "session". This holds their place in the class that another student will not be able to have. Once a session begins, if the student is unable to attend a class, please let me know and you will be given the opportunity to attend a different class (where space is available) 1 time per session. The make-up is non-transferable to another student. You must call at least 2 hours ahead of your class start time to be given rescheduling privileges.
On the 1st day of a new session your payment must be made or your P.O./Voucher must be listed or a paper form given to me at the beginning of class. All charters have the expressed rule of not teaching students unless their P.O./Voucher is in place. Once a session begins, there are no refunds.
It is deeply important to me to create an atmosphere of joyous creativity. We all learn, process and create in so many different ways. Some need absolute silence (that would be me!) and others can watch TV, sing at the top of their lungs while dancing and still produce (boggles my mind!!). In order to give everyone the best opportunity to learn, I maintain a calm and courteous atmosphere. In my classroom I have listed rules to promote this environment; they are:
RELAX! and find the fun in the process
Honor each other ~ Your words and actions must display care of others - absolutely NO harsh words, inappropriate conversation or behavior is tolerated
Be supportive and encouraging ~ to YOURSELF (this is the one I have to remind students of the most!) and others
Open your ears and eyes to NEW ways of doing things
Be diligent and ready to learn
Students that are not able to accept and implement these rules (after sufficient instruction/opportunity to change) will not be invited to continue to participate. Please know - I understand wiggles and silliness, and I have rarely had a problem that a good, loving conversation hasn't fixed; and I protect all my students like they are my kiddos.
When you arrive, please come through the flower arbor and gate. Please close the gate after you enter! My studio is through the glass door to the right of the garden. Students: come on in, put on an apron (If you want to), have a seat, get excited about our project!!!, but don't touch anything until instructed to do so ;).
There is so much great art I have planned for each lesson, please be on time! I start instruction promptly. On the first day of the session I give a Keynote presentation of our artist and medium, along with a handout containing that information. I then show a silent video of me creating our project for that day as I commentate it with them. I run that video on a large TV, on a loop, so students can refer back to it as I go around working with each student individually. If a student finishes their project early, they have either free studio time (using whatever medium I have in the studio) or a secondary project I assign.
Before the end of class each student is responsible for cleaning up their area, then they are free to go. If the weather permits, the students wait on the patio for parent pick-up. Parents need to let me know their students have permission to exit through the gate on their own. They will bring home their Artist Information Sheet (Week 1 of the session) and any completed (and dry) artwork.
Parents are invited to stay until their student is comfortable. I will do all I can for nervous attendees to get comfortable in my studio. Please understand, I am not able to chat during class time - if you have anything to discuss with me please come a bit early or wait until after class. Parents are welcome to sit out on the patio and observe through the glass door. And PLEASE - tell your kids their artwork is amazing. Some keywords that can be helpful are: exciting, amazing, unique, powerful; as well as "tell me all about this work of art". Special teacher request: please understand I will do my best to teach your children technique to create lovely artwork; then they take what they learn and give it their own, unique approach - which I wholeheartedly applaud!
I believe everyone is creative in their own way and is able to learn to do any type of art. Just as the masters and many contemporary artists knew/know well: the acquired knowledge of technique gives freedom to create with greater ease. I do not expect my students to create a copy of my examples, but I do expect them to experience and develop the techniques I am teaching. Then I encourage them to express their uniqueness in their projects! I never want to stifle exuberant self-expression or expect uniformity in my students, because I get to learn so much from them too!
